so i had someone drill my dead bolts friday while i was at work and entered my home illegally...

i guess i found out the hard way how easy it is to drill the locks you can pick up at a hardware store...

im split between buying new high dollar locks (any info/help on brands/types would be a big help) or having 3 cylinders made for kwik set dead bolts made up. im thinking old carbide end mill shanks EDMed to the specs of the stock cylinders would prevent drilling...

being that im undecided on which direction im going in, if i can just get a rough ball park idea of how much it would be.

IICR its about 1" long and 3/4" dia with an odd shaped hole through the axis (wired) and then 4 or 5 small ~1/8" on one side of the cylinder. also on the back end it has a snap ring groove. (if you can think of an easier way to do it and have it fit in the stock lock body it will be fine)

i know its hard to quote without a print and i have a feeling its going to be much more expensive than im thinking due to the small quantity but i figured i would ask.

thank you for your time. it would be simpler & less expensive to install a grade-1 (not found in home center) high security lock, such as:
- medeco (M3 is their newer version of biaxial)
- schlage primus (b700, or b800 series only)
- assa, abloy, etc

these locks have: key duplication restriction, a strong bolt, a strong body, with an overall design of strength. they all have hardened steel inserts (shaped as tiny little pins, wafers, or disks), to prevent/slow down drilling attacks. they have hardened steel inserts to protect other parts of the lock that could be attacked (but were not in your situation).

note that these inserts are not carbide, they are hardened steel. this is either due to cost to manufacture, or easier to defeat.

if you have more than one deadbolt on the door, the second should be of a different design. for example, 1 cylindrical + 1 vertical deadbolt, or 1 cylindrical + 1 police lock, etc.

i do not like kwikset, it is a light grade of lock & bolt is weak.

getting back to your original question, making a plug out of carbide... you would have to make it the same size diameter as the original, to maintain the .003 (more or less) tolerance between the plug and the cylinder. if you were able to edm the keyway, and the 5 or 6 holes for the pins, thread the end of the plug, drill a tiny hole for the pin at the back.... and everything was exactly the same as before, then it can be easily picked open (kwikset locks are easy to pick, due to their pin design, which is a loose tolerance, which allows reliabilty in a cheap lock), & may have a mechanical failure (you are locked out). so i recommend medeco m-3, or equivalent.

no lock manufacturers (afaik) make the plug out of solid carbide (nor solid hardened steel). probably for reliability (brass acts as a bearing like material, but steel will rust & lock up).

- normally the plug is made of hardened brass (for wear resistance), some have hardened inserts within the brass.
- low grade manufacturers (such as kwikset) use zamak (zinc) alloys.
