STRETCH WRAP 101: BENEFITS, APPLICATIONS AND EFFICIENCY

WHAT IS STRETCH FILM?

Commonly referred to as pallet wrap or stretch wrap, stretch film is typically made from a type of plastic called linear low-density polyethylene, or LLDPE. The final product after a series of manipulations during manufacturing is an extremely thin, elastic-like, plastic. It is wrapped around products or pallets, either by hand or by machine, to secure the load before it is stored or shipped.

You will get efficient and thoughtful service from SMART WASP.

There is a wide range of options available, with varying levels, widths, and gauges. The specs you need will vary based on a few factors, including your pallet type, product, and application. If there are so many options, how do you know what to use?  Our team of Packaging Specialists is ready to tailor the product offering to your specific needs and application.

WHY DO I NEED STRETCH FILM?

When the right stretch film is properly applied to your pallet, it will ensure the load stays secure during transport and storage, minimizing the risk of any shifting or damage. A poorly wrapped pallet? That is a recipe for disaster and can cost you – big time. You can read more about the impact of poor packaging in our recent blog Minimizing Inventory Loss. Further benefits are protection against weather and dust, and debris, protect your products from tampering, all while keeping your crew safe in the warehouse and on the road.

The variety of options available also makes it a product that can be very specialized for your needs. Some of our customers require UV film to protect their product from the sun’s rays, while others require specialized ventilated film to ensure their product has sufficient airflow in transportation

APPLICATION MATTERS

Once the film selection has been made with one of our trusted specialists, the next step is application. For the film to do its job correctly, the user (or machine) must ensure the proper coverage, enough tension, and the right amount of stretch.

The main characteristic of stretch film is in the name – stretch – and it should do just that.

The film has memory, so stretching is what will give you the taut secure wrap that a pallet needs for transport.

HAND OR MACHINE?

Application can be done by hand or machine, and your choice depends on space, pallet volume, and load type. If done by hand, warehouse staff will manually apply the film to the pallet. Using handles can help ensure ergonomic application, but proper wrapping and employee safety rely on expertise.

When it comes to application by machinery, there are more options available from semi-automatic to robotic. These machines have gears and settings that will determine the speed of the turn, the wrap’s tension, and the amount of stretch given to the film. When used correctly and with the right film, these settings ensure a secure wrap.

Having a specialist who understands these machines is essential, and our team has seen it all.

EFFICIENCY IS TOP PRIORITY

In the fast-paced industry of logistics, efficiency is not a luxury – it’s a necessity. When applied correctly, it can maximize both time and cost savings. As an added benefit, efficient use will reduce waste, which is increasingly more important as we recognize the impact plastic has on the environment, especially when not properly recycled or repurposed.

Masterful use of stretch film isn’t just about optimizing your resources but safeguarding your products and profits. With DUMAK, this does not have to come at an extreme price tag – we are not only experts in selection and application, but our pricing is unbeatable thanks to our relationships with our preferred vendors. The main advantages and differences between stretch film and ...

With the continuous development of global logistics and supply chain management, the choice of packaging method plays a vital role in improving transportation efficiency and ensuring the safety of goods. Among the many packaging methods, stretch film and pallet wrap are the two most common ones. They each have unique advantages and can provide the best protection and convenient handling solutions in different scenarios. Today we can focus on the difference between these two packaging methods:

  1. Advantages and characteristics of stretch film

Stretch film is a thin film material that is wrapped on the surface of an object after mechanical stretching to generate tension. Its main advantages are reflected in the following aspects:

Efficient protection: The tension generated by stretching can tightly wrap the object to prevent the goods from being polluted by the outside world (such as dust, moisture, etc.) and impact damage during transportation, and play a certain protective role.

Cost-effectiveness: The production cost of stretch film is relatively low, and it can be quickly packaged on automatic or semi-automatic equipment. It is suitable for large-scale and efficient packaging operations, especially for warehousing and pallet transportation.

Strong adaptability: Stretch film has good stretchability and can adapt to objects of different shapes and sizes. Especially in pallet wrap, it can stabilize the goods well and improve the overall stability of the pallet.

Environmentally friendly: With the improvement of environmental awareness, many stretch films are produced with recyclable materials, reducing the burden on the environment.

  1. Advantages and characteristics of pallet wrap

Pallet wrap refers to a packaging method in which products are placed on pallets and fixed firmly on the pallets through different packaging materials (such as stretch film, heat shrink film, etc.). Its main advantages include:

Easy to handle and transport: pallet wrap makes it easier to stack and transport items. Since the pallets themselves usually have standardized sizes, they are suitable for handling by mechanical equipment such as forklifts and stackers, which significantly improves logistics efficiency.

Improve stacking stability: Through reasonable pallet wrap design, the goods can be effectively protected from external impact during transportation, while ensuring the stability of the goods during stacking and reducing possible damage during transportation.

Easy to store and manage: The unified standard of pallet wrap makes it easier to stack and manage goods in warehouses, which can make more effective use of storage space and reduce storage costs.

Suitable for bulk commodities: pallet wrap is particularly suitable for bulk commodities, such as cartons, barreled goods, etc. The standardized configuration of pallets improves the efficiency of storage and transportation.

3.The main difference between stretch film and pallet wrap

Different functions: Stretch film packaging is to wrap the packaging film tightly on the surface of the goods to provide physical protection, while pallet wrap is mainly for easy handling and stacking, focusing on improving the efficiency of transportation and warehousing.

Different packaging methods: Stretch film packaging usually relies on mechanical stretching and is suitable for stable protection of goods; while pallet wrap is to place the goods on the pallet for overall handling and storage, which depends more on the structure and size of the pallet itself.

Different applicable scenarios: Stretch film is suitable for single or multiple commodity packaging that needs protection and sealing, especially during transportation; pallet wrap is suitable for bulk commodities that need to be transported, handled or stored in batches, especially in warehousing and logistics.
