The introduction of hydraulic jacks has revolutionized several industries. Chances are you’ve witnessed their application when lifting vehicles, and perhaps you’ve tried operating one yourself. But how deep is your understanding of hydraulic jacks? We hope you’re more knowledgeable than the person in the example below.

Explore our detailed guide to hydraulic jacks to familiarize yourself with the different types, their operational mechanisms, and their various applications!

How does a hydraulic jack work?

Hydraulic jacks are distinct from mechanical jacks, as they typically handle much heavier loads and can lift them to greater heights. The primary mechanism involves a hydraulic cylinder – these jacks rely on the force generated by pressure to elevate objects. Heavy loads are elevated by using plump plungers to circulate oil between two cylinders, which creates pressure within the cylinder.

Types of Hydraulic Jacks

Bottle Jacks

Bottle jacks, often referred to as hand jacks, provide an accessible method for individuals to lift vehicles for on-road assistance or inspections. Available in various sizes and lifting capacities ranging from 45 kilograms to several tonnes, bottle jacks utilize a vertical shaft that supports a bearing pad, which directly carries the weight of the load as it's lifted.

Trolley/Floor Jacks

Unlike the vertical operation of bottle jacks, trolley jacks, also known as floor jacks, have a horizontal shaft that actuates a crank attached to a lifting pad, which, in turn, elevates the load vertically. This design grants a far superior range of vertical height compared to bottle jacks and is available in both small and large models.

How to use a Hydraulic Jack

Though there are myriad trolley jacks available on the market, the fundamental operation principles remain consistent across them. To start, release the pressure in the jack and lower it completely. Ensure it contains enough oil and is functioning correctly, then position it safely under the load and pump until it raises. How to use a small Hydraulic Trolley Jack

Step 1

For smaller-sized jacks, start by opening the release valve and lowering the jack fully.

Step 2

Next, remove the black cover plate on the top of the jack to access the hydraulic ram. Beneath the cover, on top of the ram, is the rubber grommet – the oil filler plug.

Step 3

With the release valve still open, pump the jack handle rapidly several times.

Step 4

Then, gently pinch the oil filler plug to allow trapped air to escape. You may hear a hiss as air exits – be cautious not to remove the plug completely.

Step 5

Close the release valve and inspect the jack for correct operation. The air purge may need to be repeated a few times for optimal performance.

How to use a large Hydraulic Trolley Jack

Step 1

Twist the handle to completely open the release valve and lower the jack.

Step 2

Pump the jack multiple times while keeping the release valve open, then leave the jack handle in the downward position.

Step 3

Find the screw-in filler plug on the oil chamber and loosen it adequately to let air escape.

Step 4

Re-tighten the filler plug and double-check the jack for proper operation. The air purge procedure may need to be repeated for effectiveness.

How to use a Bottle Jack

Step 1

Purging air from a bottle jack is quite similar to the procedure for small trolley jacks. Begin by loosening the release valve and pumping the handle a few times.

Step 2

Next, position the bottle jack so the oil fill plug is facing directly upward and ensure the unit is level.

Step 3

Utilize a flat screwdriver to slide the oil fill plug sideways, allowing air to escape. Take care not to damage the plug – similar purging may be necessary for fine-tuning each hydraulic jack’s performance.

Step 4

When adding oil, completely remove the fill plug and refill until the oil reaches the level of the filler plug hole when the jack stands upright.
