Why Buy Used Injection Molding Machines

Over the last couple of years, the procurement of used machines has skyrocketed. Part of that is manufacturers, especially in the plastics processing industry, have received more orders than they can keep up with. Added to that is the difficulty in finding new equipment and getting it in the desired timeframe. Another advantage in buying used injection molding equipment is familiarity. If you have employees that are already skilled on a particular brand of injection molder, buying another machine of the same make will cut down on training time, creating further savings of time and money for your company.

What To Look For In Used Injection Moulding Machines For Sale

No matter what kind of plastics processing equipment you are looking for, there are certain processes and criteria you can follow and set in order to make sure your purchase is successful. Ask yourself these two questions first.

  • What current deficiencies do you want the used plastic injection moulding machine to solve or fill?
  • What do you need the additional machine to do? In other words, what size molds will you need the machine to produce? What kind of pressure will be necessary?

Other questions to consider before looking at plastic injection molding machines for sale are what materials/viscosity the machine will need to handle, the total number of parts you need the machine to produce, and the ejector rod spacing you will need.

Once you have determined the day-to-day basics you need a plastic injection molding machine to fulfill, it is time to consider what options or accessories you’d like the new addition to your inventory to have. Are you seeking specific hydraulic or air functions? Do you want a robotic interface?

Knowing what you need and want when looking at used plastic injection moulding machines for sale will enable you to make 1:1 price comparisons and select the option that is best for your shop.

How To Inspect Used Injection Moulding Machines For Sale

Having spent a lot of time determining what you want in a used plastic processing machine, it makes sense to ensure the specific machine you are purchasing is in ideal shape. There are specific facets of the equipment you can evaluate to make sure your expectations will be met. We offer a comprehensive checklist for inspecting our equipment specifically to help our buyers feel secure and confident in their investment.

How Much Do Used Plastic Injection Molding Machines Cost?

As is the case with so much in the world, there is no single answer to this seemingly simple question. Even where new equipment is concerned, there is not necessarily price uniformity. Large machines can cost anywhere between $50,000-$200,000, but sometimes a smaller machine may cost $100,000 because of its quality and/or capabilities. The same holds true for used machinery. If anything, pricing may be less uniform because so much depends on condition, the warranty, shipping, and more. Nonetheless, it is important to have a budget figure in mind when looking for a plastic injection machine for sale. How can you match up your budget with the right piece of used plastics processing equipment? Here are a few things to consider.

Cost of owning/operating industrial Injection molding ...

We do injection molding of thermal plastic (nylon in our case) in our shop, primarily for one customer. To be honest, we've never had anyone else ask for a quote or if we do it or anything molded, hence we have never invested in the tooling and additional set up to do silicone. We did once suggest to a customer they invested in a mold for one of their parts looking at their order history over a year. When they heard the price of the mold they decided to invest in something that could easily be redeveloped or become obsolete was not a good investment. Several years later, the design hasn't changed, but in the world of production you never know.
A lot of the plastic parts we see, even if they are small pieces always seems to be machined. Do you or your customers have a mold already? If so, then from their perspective it would be cheaper to run them molded, but if not for such a low quantity I would personally think you'd have better luck with perhaps a swiss lathe? (which again aren't cheap, but I am saying from the perspective if you do not have a mold, were to outsource if you do not have those machining capabilities already, and would be running similar quantities to those mentioned). We run primarily Nylon, we are set up for thermal plastic - the set up used is a little different between nylon and silicone, and at this time we do not run silicone. The material cost per part is not an awful lot. Most of the cost associated with the parts we run is operational time, set up is warming the machine up, which can take some time. I personally cannot imagine how you will make a profit running at $10 per hour? Our heating and cooling costs are probably around $10 per hour. Running it during the summer can be a pain because it does get very very warm in the area we run it.
The main differences in the set up is that the injection would require a different screw and barrel and silicone molds have a different part ejection. We use pins, silicone would typically use something like air injection, brushed out, etc. Machines can be changed out, but time consuming and therefore costly.
With Nylon sometimes we get air bubbles, this is only known because one of the parts we mold we run some drill operations. So we never ever run exactly what we need, we always over run. I say this because of the undercut in the drawing you sent a link to.
I suppose the trouble with your decision is if the quantity takes off an investment would be worth it, if it doesn't then it might not be worth your while to invest in a further mold machine or tooling. I am unsure about finding a machine shop local to you that would run them - would depend if a. such a place exists (unsure what the market is like in your area) and b. if they will run smaller quantities if you already have the mold.
My opinion, personally, is not to invest in such a low possibility for a decent return. If you find a cheap mold machine, there is probably a reason for it, we have an old Boy mold machine that is great for us, but if something goes its usually an issue to find a replacement part (and to be honest we end up making our own replacement part if we can because we have such an issue finding the right part for a decent price) These appear as though they can be run different ways (again unless your customer already has a mold). If they have a mold you would be better to outsource, someone else can run them and you can keep the business. I wouldn't rule out shops around the US as unless time is a constraint shipping a box can be done at a relatively low price (and gas isn't cheap!)
Best of luck with your decision.
