One of the most distinctive types of injection molds is the unscrewing mold. This specialized molding process uses mold technology that incorporates both movement and rotation to produce threaded components. Certain plastic parts, such as caps and closures with fine threads, cannot be ejected using conventional methods. Once molded, these parts must be carefully unscrewed from the mold to prevent damage to the threads.

First, plastic is injected into the mold. Once the plastic has cooled, the threaded core begins to unscrew. The unscrewing mechanism operates using a rack and pinion system and is powered by a hydraulic cylinder.

 

The rack turns three sets of gears, which retract the threaded core into the ejector box.

 

After the threaded core has fully unscrewed, the mold opens, and the ejector system advances a stripper plate to eject the part.

 

Once the part is fully ejected, the hydraulic cylinder reverses, screwing the threaded core back into the molding position, and the process repeats.

Volume

Ease of Removal

How easily an unscrewing mold should release from the final product is an important design consideration. Water bottles typically have only a few threadssometimes just two or threebecause the cap needs to be easy to remove. To ensure the caps do not come off too easily, the threads are spaced slightly farther apart. In contrast, an unscrewing mold used for a medical device will likely require many evenly spaced threads that are difficult to pull off the device. The material needed for these two very different applications is influenced by how easily the part is intended to be removed from the product.

 

 

The number of threads will vary depending on the final product. Water bottles do not require a high thread count because they are relatively lightweight and need to be easy to remove. If the unscrewing mold is intended for a plastic component located under the hood of a car, it requires a higher thread count for greater durability. The number of threads needed plays a significant role in the final production cost, so it must be tested to ensure it meets the requirements of the end product.
